How To Sand A Raised Panel Door
In the past i have done this mostly by hand sanding.
How to sand a raised panel door. I now have a rotex and ets 150 3 and was wondering if i purchased a soft pad for the ets if this would help in the sanding of an ogee raised panel profile. This is usually the most time consuming tedious part of the project. The finish becomes worn over time creating the need for refinishing. A good sand job on a heavily detailed cabinet door shouldn t take more than 15 minutes 7 8min per side.
The principles in sanding a door apply to almost any frame and panel construction which is stock in trade in my furniture business. Sanding raised panel doors requires more work because you cannot fit a sander around the edges of the panels. This will roughen the surface a little and allow the primer to adhere better. Sand the back of the panel and the field with 100 120 150 and 180 grit paper.
I hate hand sanding the raised panel profiles especially the end grain ones. Before assembling the door sand the panel itself and the moulded section surrounding the field. This is also a good time to sand the inside profiles of the rails and stiles sand the panel and seal the end grain of the panels with shellac. Smooth out chipped paint and imperfections from previous paint jobs.
But i wanted to share with you how i sanded the raised panels for the cabinet doors. All raised panel doors are comprised of three components. A nice wood stain that matches the wood work and compliments the color scheme in the room can make even a 30 door look expensive. Start with a light sandpaper or a sanding sponge 180 or 220 grit.
Stiles these are the vertical components. They extend the full height of the door. While hollow core doors are often great budget savers when compared to solid wood panel doors there s no reason they can t be attractive. I know watching a guy sand wood is not very exciting.
Refinishing doors is not a job that anyone really looks forward to especially raised panel doors.
